This trek is a great alternative to the Inca trail because you can enjoy similar spectacular landscapes but its a newer and less crowded route. On this tour we can admire beautiful high Andean scenery, impressive snow-capped mountains (Puna, 4800mts), as well as sub-tropical and tropical jungle views. This is a special trek because we finish in one of the seven wonders of the world: Machu Picchu.
General Information
Early, at 4:30am, we collect you from your hotel and go to Mollepata district, arriving at 8:00am. We enjoy breakfast and meet the horse man and horses that will help us load all the camping equipment. During the walk we can appreciate the magnificent Andean landscapes. We will have lunch in Silcakancha. After, we go through the slopes of the imposing Tucarhuay snowy peak (5910mts) until the campsite at Soraypampa.
After breakfast we continue our walk. Starting with Salkantay Pampa and ascend to the Salkantay- Humantay Pass (4,600mts), a place with splendid views of the snow-capped mountains where it’s common to see avalanches. The trail will descend towards Huayracpampa, and head to the jungle edge of Challway, this last section offers a spectacular range of flora and fauna as well as beautiful landscapes. If we arrive with enough time, we will be rewarded with a visit to the Colpapampa hot springs. This is our second campsite.
It’s an amazing day because of a wide variety of experiences; After breakfast we restart our trekking adventure. On this day the flora and fauna will be more prominent than before. We also go deeper into the jungle by the Santa Teresa river, to find beautiful waterfalls and hot springs to take a dip and see some different species of orchids; finally, we reach Sawayaku. Our camp will be located in Sawayaku beach.
Continuing our trek after a delicious breakfast, we have the opportunity to see some fruits, coca and coffee plantations. We ascend to Llactapata to catch our first glimpse of Machu Picchu and the surrounding area. Then, we descend towards the hydroelectric power station to take the train towards Aguas Calientes to our hotel for the night.
Very early in the morning we go up to the historic sanctuary of Machu Picchu. Our 2 hour guided tour will lead us through the entire Inca citadel; visiting the main square, temple of the condor, Inti Huatana, the temple of the three windows and other important sites. After the tour there will be free time for other activities such as: visiting other interesting places in Machu Picchu, climb Huayna Picchu (as an optional short trek), or go down to the town of Aguas Calientes to relax or enjoy the hot springs. We finish our trip boarding the train to Ollantaytambo where we will transfer you back to Cusco.
