The “Q’eswachaka” bridge requires annual maintenance because the straw (Ichu) that it is made out of begins to decompose. Since the Inca times the reconstruction is carried out in 3 days (before the second Sunday of June) and on the 4th day the ceremony concludes with a folk festival, where local people share their unique traditions and customs to the world.
5am pick up from your accommodation and drive to Cusipata (1.5 hours) for breakfast (included) in a local house. From there we start our journey through the beautiful landscape with exuberant flora and fauna. Our first stop is the Pomacanchi lagoon, the beginning of a 4 lagoon circuit, Acopia, Asnaqocha and Pampamarca. Then, we make a brief visit to Tupac Amaru II house. Next, is the Inca Qeswachaqa bridge located on the Apurímac river, 30 meters long and 3780amsl. We explore the place and learn about this Inca bridge that is restored every year in June with a type of straw from the area called Ichu. Afterwards is the town of Checacupe where we can appreciate 3 bridges from different times, Inca bridge, colonial bridge and current bridge. There will be time for photographs before finally arriving back in Cusipata at 2:00pm to enjoy lunch (included). Return to Cusco at 5:30pm approx.
