The Inca Trail to Machu Picchu is undoubtedly one of the most frequented excursions by those visiting Peru in search of adventure. You will enjoy, from beginning to end, the spectacular landscapes of the Andes mountain range mixed with the jungle. There is no other place in our planet that resembles the way that this natural path leads to a location that constantly changes ecosystems, with imposing snow-capped mountains, rivers and stunning fauna and flora. Add to all of this the natural wonders of the Inca constructions, an architectural masterpiece that lays in perfect harmony with nature.
General Information
Pick up from your hotel in our vehicle to Piscacuchu (2700mts) A community located on kilometer 82 of the Cusco- Machu Picchu railway system, the starting point of the Inca Trail. We start by crossing the bridge over the Urubamba river, walking through a long flat road, until Miskay (2800mts). From there, we go to the town of Llactapata (2650mts). After another 5 hour walk, we will arrive at Wayllabamba (3000mts) place of the first campsite.
Wake up at 6:00a.m. After breakfast, we begin the most challenging part of the trek climbing the Llulluchapampa valley for 9 km. Throughout this place the scenery changes abruptly from mountain range to puna grassland. The road will lead us to the first mountain pass Warmihuañusca, dead woman's pass (4225mts, 13776 ft). We might be able to see some animals typical of the Inca trail such as the spectacled bear, deer and domesticated llamas and alpacas that walk on the “ichu” (straw) of Pacaymayo valley (3600mts), where we will camp.
This is the longest but also the most interesting day because of all the archaeological sites and the cloudy forest that we cross. We leave Pacaymayo early in the morning to the second mountain pass, the Abra de Runkurakay (3970mts). Halfway through, we stop at an archaeological place with the same name, located at 3800m that consists of a small oval structure. After, we go down towards Yanacocha and enter the cloudy forest to reach Sayacmarca (3624mts). This is a beautiful complex formed by a semicircular construction. We will walk through the Inca tunnel to arrive at the third mountain pass, Abra de Phuyupatamarca (3700mts). Along this road we can appreciate the magnitude of the Inca architecture, Phuyupatamarca (town above the clouds). We continue our descent along a stone path that leads to Wiñay Huayna (2650mts), an Inca place made up of numerous agricultural terraces, and the location of our campsite. We have hot showers and a farewell dinner.
Wake up at 4:00a.m. to leave Wiñay Huayna. After an hour of walking along the flat stone path on the edge of the mountainous jungle we arrive at Inti Punku, the sun gate (2750mts) and if weather permits, we will be able to see the sunrise. From there, it will take approximately 40 min to descend to Machu Picchu sanctuary up to the checkpoint where we register and leave our backpacks. We begin a complete guided tour of approximately two hours of the Inca Sanctuary. Afterwards, you will have free time to walk and climb the mountain of Huayna Picchu (please check beforehand with our travel agency as there are only 400 tickets available per day). In the afternoon, we meet in the town of Aguas Calientes where you have the option of visiting the hot springs before returning to Cusco.
