Tour Overview

Visit the recent Inca discovery of the last golden refuge for 4 days/ 3 nights. The archaeological site of Choquequirao is very interesting and full of mystery. It is one of the most popular treks in the Cusco region.

Choquequirao is located in the foothills of the Salkantay mountain range, at 3,030amsl, surrounded by the Apus Yanama, Ampay, Chokecarpu, Pumasillo and Panta, on the left bank of the Apurimac river. In Inca times, it linked to Machu Picchu by an intricate network of trails. There are many reasons to visit: The valleys with impressive nature, mountains covered with snow and the great variety of plants and animals. Choquequirao is considered as “the last refuge of the Inca empire”.

Visitors can see a complex hydraulic system, most likely for domestic, ceremonial and agricultural use. The geographical location of Choquequirao, compared to other sites from the same period, indicates that it was an Inca territory in the valley of the Apurimac river. There are many similarities between Choquequirao and Machu Picchu.

The latter was a sanctuary dedicated to the worshiping of the Inca king Pachacutec. Choquequirao was also a sacred place, used for purposes related to war or with the surrounding apus (holy mountains). Both are located next to Salkantay Mountain above a river: In the case of Machu Picchu, the Wilcamayu River and in Choquequirao, the Apurimac River.

Ecotourism, complying with all the regulations of conservation, helps with the sustainable development in the area. The Inca trail to Choquequirao is located in an area of nature that has no disturbances or pollution. The breathtaking landscapes along with endemic plants and wild animals makes it one of the most wonderful treks.

Morning pick up from your hotel to start the trip to the town of Cachora. On the way there will be a short stop to appreciate the archaeological remains of Tarawasi from the bus, then we continue to the Cunyac bridge between the regions of Cusco and Apurimac. Driving through the districts of Curawasi and Saywite we will reach Cachora (4 hour trip approx.). From here we begin our walk along a gentle path to reach the Capuliyoc pass (2800mts) where, after 2 hours, we stop for lunch. After the break we descend for 3 hours to the town of Chaquisqa (1930mts), our first campsite. A place with warm climate and impressive landscapes.

After breakfast (5:00 am), we walk towards Rosalinas beach (1550mts), and then ascend for 3 hours the slope towards Santa Rosa (2100mts), the most challenging part of the journey. Here we enjoy lunch. Next, we go up to Maranpata (2850mts) which is an easier climb. In this part, we can see the path that we walked through on the first day and the endemic vegetation of the place. Then we travel along a 2 hour straight path towards Sunchupata, where our campsite is. From this point, it’s one hour to Choquequirao.

Early breakfast (5:00 am) followed by a 1 hour trek to Choquequirao to see the sunrise. We will have a 3 hour guided tour with detailed explanations of the importance of this Inca refuge. At an indicated time we return to Sunchupata and begin the descend to Santa Rosa, our spot for lunch. Next, we walk for an hour to Rosalinas beach and continue for another two hours to the town of Chaquisqa, our third campsite.

A delicious breakfast will be served in Chaquisqa (06:00 am). We return on the same road to Cachora, the slope that we descend on the first day, to reach Capuliyoc. From here it is a much smoother stretch to arrive in the town of Cachora at 12:00pm approx. On the way we can appreciate exotic flora, fauna, as well as landscapes of imposing snow-capped mountains and the impressive Apurimac canyon. In the afternoon we can relax in the medicinal hot springs of Qonoq and rest for an hour. We return to Cusco around 8:00pm.
