Visit the recent Inca discovery of the last golden refuge for 4 days/ 3 nights. The archaeological site of Choquequirao is very interesting and full of mystery. It is one of the most popular treks in the Cusco region.
Choquequirao is located in the foothills of the Salkantay mountain range, at 3,030amsl, surrounded by the Apus Yanama, Ampay, Chokecarpu, Pumasillo and Panta, on the left bank of the Apurimac river. In Inca times, it linked to Machu Picchu by an intricate network of trails. There are many reasons to visit: The valleys with impressive nature, mountains covered with snow and the great variety of plants and animals. Choquequirao is considered as “the last refuge of the Inca empire”.
Visitors can see a complex hydraulic system, most likely for domestic, ceremonial and agricultural use. The geographical location of Choquequirao, compared to other sites from the same period, indicates that it was an Inca territory in the valley of the Apurimac river. There are many similarities between Choquequirao and Machu Picchu.
The latter was a sanctuary dedicated to the worshiping of the Inca king Pachacutec. Choquequirao was also a sacred place, used for purposes related to war or with the surrounding apus (holy mountains). Both are located next to Salkantay Mountain above a river: In the case of Machu Picchu, the Wilcamayu River and in Choquequirao, the Apurimac River.
Ecotourism, complying with all the regulations of conservation, helps with the sustainable development in the area. The Inca trail to Choquequirao is located in an area of nature that has no disturbances or pollution. The breathtaking landscapes along with endemic plants and wild animals makes it one of the most wonderful treks.
